I have no idea what this all means. Who is trying to hide what from who? What does “ripped” means in this context? Why is the narrator and his friend smiling?

I remember someone using the term, ‘Ripped’ infront of me. The answer to my question of, ‘What?’ was: ‘He’s fit, um, he’s got muscles?’ This is the best my friend could describe.
