I have no idea what this all means. Who is trying to hide what from who? What does “ripped” means in this context? Why is the narrator and his friend smiling?

I remember someone using the term, ‘Ripped’ infront of me. The answer to my question of, ‘What?’ was: ‘He’s fit, um, he’s got muscles?’ This is the best my friend could describe. They were probably hiding the fact they like him[The reason they're smiling], so the narrator’s Grandmother doesn’t say anything.
Why when the guy is afro they have to say, black guy and never use white guy?
Because it’s actually relevant in this case, idiot.
